I only do this at night, I close all bathroom doors, especially the one in my bedroom, so open during the day and closed at night!

I don't even know why I do this. anyone do something similar?

I close mine so I can pop in every once in awhile, fart, and then bask in its richness.

Yes, but mainly because we have two cats, one of which is guaranteed to unroll the toilet paper as soon as he gets access to a bathroom.

Only at night so the bathroom ghost that appears behind me when I close my eyes in the shower doesn't go to my room.

Aren't you afraid of heat escaping if you keep it open?

Why do you want hot bathrooms?

I keep it closed. The bathroom is an environment of escape. Where life breaks itself down into the simple things like grooming, washing, urinating and pooping. I like to maintain that illusion.

Of course not. How else you gonna know at a glance which facilities are free when you need to use 'em?

No. An open door means it unoccupied and a closed door means there's someone shitting inside. I don't know why people can't get that through their thick ass heads. I've had the door opened on me so many times 💩

Uhm, you can lock the door? :P

I tend to keep my bathroom (toilet only) door closed for space reasons alone, as the door opens into the central corridor of my apartment. Also, i don't trust my cats with either the toilet paper roll, nor the toilet bowl.
I keep the bathroom (shower, bathtub, sink) door open pretty much all the time, because ... why not.

Yes because one of our cats likes climbing on the toilet bowl. So best keep it closed.

I actually want the heat or ac from the bathroom to get out into the upstairs landing.

I live alone so I never close my bathroom doors regardless. The master bath has to stay open all night for pee breaks. Honestly, I took my guest bathroom door off about a month ago for a remodel and have never put it back on. Thinking about doing the same for my master bath.

Only because my roommate has cats and they like to make a mess with the toiletries

So it really isn't a guest bathroom then.

Interesting fact: I'm in France so the toilet and the bathroom are separate rooms. It's actually great.

We have a small hallway so they need to stay somewhat closed if you want to pass through.

I do now because the laundry room is in the bathroom and cats like to mess around over there.

Yup, it is the only sensible way. I had a roommate who came from a household where the bathroom door was always closed after use, and it led to some uncomfortable situations. I was on the throne, butt-naked, and he barges right in. I just stared at him, and he immediately turned about-face, and left without a without a word, or apology. The problem was that the latch didn't work well, and even when locked could be opened easily with a bit of force.
Why wouldn't you say something while he's forcing the door open?
Kevers

Yes, the dogs would eat the toilet paper and get into the trash if we didn't.

My roommates girlfriend closes the bathroom door whenever she is here and it is the most annoying thing lol

I gotta be honest. I went to a friend's place in China and after barging in on both her and her husband when they were pooping (not at the same time!), I understood how this works. I thought this was just a Chinese thing, but you have made me realize that I just don't know much about bathroom etiquette apparently.

Where I come from you just lock the damn door!

The thing about this, is that who just goes right up to the closed door and tries the handle without knocking first? A knock on a closed bathroom door should be your first thing even if you keep it closed all the time.

Why wouldn't you say something while he's forcing the door open?

Because it took but an instant to open the door. It wasn't like he was jimmying the thing. And if he was so desperate to watch me shit, who was I to object?

My family keeps breaking the fucking locks by twisting the shit out of the door knob when it's locked.

No. I don't see a point.

I know someone who does, and when they come over they close mine because they don't like being able to see into it from the kitchen.

No. I'm old so I get up to pee at least twice a night, and don't feel like walking into the bathroom door because I'm too tired to remember it's closed.

Do whatever the fuck you want jesus christ. And yes, I close them when not in use.

The thing about this, is that who just goes right up to the closed door and tries the handle without knocking first?

Me. Knocking is loud and it feels like I'm rushing the person. And talking while you're pooping is awkward. So I've always preferred just trying the handle and leaving quietly when the door is locked.
I do realize that this is apparently not the norm and I have changed my behavior accordingly after the aforementioned experience.

Personally, I have never ever in my life used the bathroom WITHOUT locking the door first.

I mean, that's a you problem for living with the Hulk-family :P

I don't see how everyone should leave their bathroom doors open (especially when the bathroom has no window / fan) just because some people have faulty locks or superhuman strength :P
If i do my business and leave the door open afterwards, those smells need to be contained.

You guys don't have locks on your bathroom doors?
Yeah, but how can you tell if a door is locked just by looking at it? Are you gonna rush all the way down the hall and try the knob, just to be met with the sad realization of an occupied bathroom? You're wasting precious time!
Nacho
  • #38
Yeah I try too. The window is drafty in the winter. Also hallways look tidy when all the doors are closed.

One exception is a sunny day when I want all the windows open and light streaming everywhere.

Just by looking at it ;) Here in Finland bathroom door locks have indicators which show red if it's occupied. Even older houses usually have locks like that on the bathroom, I have seen hook locks only in outhouses and some public toilets.

But yeah I understand that's not the norm everywhere.

Dang. Finland is light years ahead of us in bathroom technology.

Gotta keep those shit particles at least partially contained.
Poltergust
  • #48
No, purely for ventilation purposes. Having the door open means that any moisture in the air in the bathroom will dry out quicker and help prevent mold.

This is probably not necessary for most bathrooms, but the one I grew up with had no other kind of ventilation otherwise (for whatever reason there are no vents in it), so I developed the habit then.

I close the one in my room. The other ones are just randomly closed. I don't really care unless someone stank it up
